What is Dragon Boating Festival?


A thrilling water sport, Dragon Boating is full of sportsmanship, technique, adrenaline, and strategy. It’s a mind juggling sport that’s concern revolves around being healthy, inculcating a positive team spirit, to have fun and making friends.

History of Dragon Boating

There are a number of theories on how Dragon Boating first came into picture, the most widely believed and popular view is to venerate a Chinese politician and poet Qu Yuan. Corruption by government at that time drove the despaired but much admired poet and politician to drown in the river. The local crowd, who knew him as a good man, took a decision of throwing food into the river so that the fishes would feed on the food and not eat Qu’s body. They also brought narrow, long paddle boats to chase the fishes away. These people made thundering sounds of drums and tried to scare the fishes away with the help of ferocious looking dragon face carved on the prow of the boat.

In the initial years of the Republic of China, “Poets Day” was celebrated on Duan Wu in honor of Qu Yuan as the first poet of China and his renown. Today, steamed, bamboo wrapped glutinous dumplings of rice called zongzi (the food intended for feeding fish) are consumed by people and dragon boating festival is held annually in memory of Qu's thespian death.

The Technique

A proper dragon boat has 20 paddlers, and a drummer. To win in this sport of Dragon Boating, the whole team needs to paddle with vigor, with a proper technique. The crew that participates in these sports gets training for the techniques involved for months. Efficient paddlers are gathered to take part in this international sport of Dragon Boat Festival.

Dragon Boating has originated from China, and had a magnificent history of 2,500 years, and went on becoming a much awaited yearly event in many countries including Hungary, Malaysia, Germany, Hong Kong, South Africa, Canada, UK, United States and many more.

In the Grand Dubai Dragon Boat Festival, generally 50 teams take part; some of the participating teams come from across the globe. Each boat, generally measures approximately 10 meters, has lavishly painted and carved "dragon" tails and heads, and carry 18-22 paddlers. Participation in this festival in decorated boats painted with dragon heads and tails, or paddling along with your crew, and shouting and playing drums in this impressive sport is a must have experience once in a lifetime. Set your painted boat along the waterway of Dubai Marina. This whole area demonstrates a picturesque and natural spectacle of life.

The Event of Dragon Boating

Dubai Dragon Festival is a success each year and following on from success of previous year, International dragon boat Festival in Dubai ,it promises to deliver a thrilling series of races , and a number of onshore activities to make sure that it is visited by a thousand of competitors and spectators as a result of last years’ success.
